Abstract

  • The number of poor people (population below the poverty line) in South Sumatra Province in March 2011 was 1,074,807 people or 14.24 percent. Compared to the poor population in March 2010 which amounted to 1,125,725 (15.47 percent), meaning the number of poor people fell by 50,918 people.
  • During the period March 2010-March 2011, the poor population in urban areas decreased by 62,079 people, while in rural areas it experienced an increase of 11,161 people. Nevertheless the percentage of poor people has decreased both in urban and rural areas.
  • The composition of the poor by area of ​​residence (urban and rural) has not changed much, with the majority (61.93 percent) of the poor being in rural areas.
  • The poverty line in the province of South Sumatra is Rp. 236,298. The poverty line in urban areas is Rp. 275,006, while the poverty line in rural areas is Rp. 214,727. Compared to March 2010, the poverty line has risen both in urban and rural areas.
  • In the period March 2010-March 2011, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and the Poverty Severity Index (P2) both showed a downward trend. This indicates that the average expenditure of the poor tends to get closer to the poverty line and the disparity in expenditure of the poor is rather narrow.
