Abstract

  • The number of the workforce in South Sumatra in August 2012 reached 3,746,373 people, a decrease of around 183,088 people compared to the February 2012 workforce of 3,929,461 people or a decrease of 24,300 people compared to August 2011 of 3,770,673 people.
  • The number of people working in South Sumatra Province in August 2012 reached 3,532,932 people, a decrease of about 176,751 compared to the situation in February 2012 of 3,709,683 people or a reduction of 20,172 compared to the situation in August 2011 of 3,553,104 people.
  • The Open Unemployment Rate (TPT) in South Sumatra in August 2012 reached 5.70 percent, an increase of 0.11 percent compared to February 2012 (5.59%) and decreased 0.07 percent compared to the August 2011 TPT (5.77% ).
  • In terms of gender, male TPT in August 2012 was 4.87 percent, lower than female TPT which reached 7.09 percent.
  • TPT in urban areas in August 2012 was 9.51 percent, far higher than in rural areas which was only 3.88 percent.
  • When compared to the situation in February 2012, the number of people working in August 2012 increased by only one sector, namely the Industrial Sector by 21,896 people, while the other sectors experienced a decline. The largest decline occurred in the Community, Social and Personal Services sector by 70,435 people, then the Agriculture, Plantation, Forestry, Hunting and Fisheries sector by 56,652 people, followed by other sectors.
  • In the past year (August 2012 - August 2011) there were an increase of 104,515 workers / laborers, and 7,606 free workers in non-agriculture, while the number of workers in other occupational status decreased. The biggest decrease in workers occurred in the status of self-employed workers by 37,552 people, then free workers in agriculture by 29,260 people and workers who were assisted by non-permanent workers by 27,494 people.
  • The largest percentage of male population working in August 2012 was workers / employees (36.13%), while the largest percentage of working women were unpaid workers (43.95%).
