Abstract

  • The number of poor people (population below the poverty line) in South Sumatra Province in September 2013 was 1,108,210 people or 14.06 percent. Compared to the poor population in March 2013 which amounted to 1,110,370 (14.24 percent), meaning the number of poor people fell by 2,160 people.
  • During the March-September 2013 period, the number of poor people in urban areas fell by 8,810 people, or by 0.49 percent. In rural areas it experienced an increase of 6,650 people, or by 0.01 percent.
  • The composition of the poor by area of ​​residence (urban and rural) has not changed much, with the majority (66.08 percent) of the poor being in rural areas.
  • The poverty line in South Sumatra province is IDR 291,058, the poverty line in urban areas is IDR 328,335, while the poverty line in rural areas is IDR 270,166. Compared to March 2013, the poverty line has increased both in urban and rural areas.
  • In the period March - September 2013, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and the Poverty Severity Index (P2) both showed increases. This indicates that the average expenditure of the poor tends to move away from the poverty line and that inequality in spending by the poor widens.
